An I Ching app for readings and reflection.
Wuxing combines three-coin I Ching readings with a searchable library of 64 hexagrams, a daily almanac, and a journal for saved questions and readings.
4,096
line readings
$ cat ./challenge
Organizing 4,096 readings.
A cast uses three coins thrown six times to create a hexagram. The reading screen brings together its judgment, image, two trigrams, and changing lines, with optional ambient audio.
Each of the 64 hexagrams has six lines that can be changing or unchanging, giving 4,096 combinations. The app needs to retrieve these readings from a cast, a library search, the almanac, or a saved journal entry.
Users can follow a reading with a clarifying cast that carries the first hexagram forward. Both readings can be saved in the journal, which tracks days of practice and saved readings.
$ ./build --steps
How we approached it.
The design and development decisions behind the product.
Three coins, six throws
Users type or speak their question before casting. Ambient audio begins before the first line appears. Red marks identify changing lines directly on the hexagram.Search by name, meaning, or number
The Sixty-Four library supports searches by name, meaning, or number and can be filtered by trigram. Users can find a hexagram again without remembering its number.Saved readings and practice history
The Journal saves each reading with its question. The almanac marks casting days alongside solar terms and moon phases. Counters show "days cast in a row" and "kept this month".
